Have you ever wondered what an archaeologist does after the digging is over? The real work begins after the excavation… in the laboratory. The Archaeology Lab at UTK is committed to providing opportunities to the the public to learn about and become involved with archaeology in our region.
We are always glad to have volunteers, who work in our various labs alongside our archaeologists, curators, and students, helping process samples, wash prehistoric and historic artifacts, and prepare artifacts for curation.
The best way to participate is with our monthly Volunteer Day, where volunteers help prepare artifacts in our collections for curation (rebagging, recording, and reboxing artifacts), or assist graduate students with their research (washing, measuring, tagging, and bagging artifacts). Volunteers can sign up for the morning session (9 am – 12 pm) or afternoon session (1 pm – 4 pm), and join us for a brown-bag lunch lecture at noon, when archaeologists from the Knoxville area will give a talk on local archaeology.
